Life Skills 1 - Units’ overview

Here is an overview of each unit:

Unit 1 – All about me

This unit aims at developing children overall self-awareness through understanding their likes, dislikes, hobbies, strengths, weaknesses, areas for improvement, and their dreams. All these are achieved through interesting activities and exercises.

The home school link activity provides a unique opportunity for parents and the child to work closely, designing a bag and filling it with things that are special to the child. The child will then take this bag and talk about himself in front of the class. This gives the child a wonderful opportunity to develop self confidence and express their feelings.

The children are given another opportunity to talk about themselves in My Project, where they are invited to talk about all the points mentioned earlier in paragraph 1. It’s amazing when children talk about themselves. This is a golden opportunity for teachers to get to know the children they teach and deal with every day.

To see where the children are with in terms of their self awareness and self management, at the end of the unit, we have Here’s what I think page which is basically a self assessment activity to help the children reflect and make their own decisions.

Here the children are encouraged to think if they have good self awareness, if they like and appreciate themselves and if they can talk about themselves in a positive way.

This is a very important page for both parents and teachers if they sincerely want to help the child develop even more. It helps to see children’s next steps and come to a realization of what need to be done to help the child have better self appreciation and boost their self confidence.


Unit 2- My Feelings

This unit aims at developing children’s emotional self awareness through understanding the different situations that make them feel happy, sad, left our or angry. It also teaches them how to transform these emotions from sad to happy or from angry to becoming calmer. Furthermore, it teachers them that it is all right to go through all these emotions but we need to recoginse them and mange them. All this is done through very interesting activities and exercises.

The home school link activity provides a unique opportunity for parents and the child to work closely, designing a family memory album showing pictures of when the child was feeling happy, sad or angry. Doing this activity with the child open doors for parents to understand children’s

feelings, help the children express those feeling and perhaps take certain action to help the child become a happier or calmer person. The child will then take this album to class and share it with his classmates. This again gives the child another opportunity to express their feelings. It also helps the teachers to develop a better understanding of this precious child.

The children are given another opportunity to talk about their feelings in My Project, where they are invited to design masks that represent happy, sad or angry faces. They then have to pick one and talk about a time they felt happy, sad or angry. This activity not only help the teacher to have better understanding of the children, it also helps the other children get to know each other more and build closer relationship. It’s amazing when you are working with children and you see how they develop better understanding of each other and respect the differences they all have.

Here the children are encouraged to see if they know what makes them happy, sad, and angry or feel left out and if they can express theses emotions.

Unit 3- My Family

This unit aims at developing children’s awareness as to how they feel as a member of their family. It teaches them no family is perfect and that there are good and bad things that happen in families. It also teaches them how to reflect on their daily behaviour , choose their acts and show their appreciation to special family members. This unit also focuses on the importance of love and respect between family members. It shows them how to respect other family members and avoid putting themselves in difficult situations. All these are achieved through interesting activities and exercise.

The home school link activity provides a unique opportunity for parents and the child to work closely, filling in a chart after observing child’s behaviuor for a week focusing on certain behaviours that show respect. This gives the child and the parents the opportunity to discuss respect, the child will identify how respectful he is of others in him family and to practice being more respectful for a week at least. Of course, we hope that these practices will be extended beyond the week as it is the consistency of practice that can lead to real change of beahviour.

The children are given the opportunity to think positively of their families and express their appreciation in My Project. Here, they are invited to design a poster, sticking pictures of family members and writing their positive qualities.

Here the children are encouraged to reflect on how they feel in their family, if they are respecting their family members and feel respected. They are also encouraged to appreciate good beahviuor in family and avoid distractive beahviour.

Unit 4- My Friends

This unit aims at developing children’s social awareness within friends’ context. It examines their ability of making friends and teaches them how to make friends, respect them and be nice to them. Through this unit the children learn to appreciate their friends, yet understand that conflict between friends may arise too. Here, we teach them how to resolve conflict between friends and practice that through role play activities.

The home school link activity provides a unique opportunity for parents and the child to widen their social circle. In this activity, the children design invitation cards for their parents to come to a party in class where they will get to meet their friends and their parents. Children are encouraged to take the responsibility for arranging and managing this party with the support of their teachers and parents.

The children are given another opportunity to show appreciation for their friends through My Project where they make a friendship chain and on each link they write their friends’ names and why they are special to them.

Here, the children are encouraged to reflect on their relationship with their friends, see if they feel lonely or have friends, if they have good relationship with their friends, if they know how to respect their friends and be nice to them. They are also encouraged to think if they have any problems with their friends and if they know how to solve these problems.

This is a very important page for both parents and teachers if they sincerely want to help the child develop even more. It helps to see children’s areas of strength and those that they need support with. It can draw their next step and come to a realization of what need to be done to help the child feel happier and have better relationship with their friends.


Unit 5- Keeping Safe

This unit aims at developing children’s safety awareness. It focuses on developing their safety awareness at home, in school, on the road and in the care. It teaches them to avoid being in dangerous situations or using unsafe items. It encourages them to keep safe at home and in school, play safely and to call for help when they encounter a dangerous situation. All this is achieved through interesting activities and exercises.

The home school link activity provides a unique opportunity for parents and the child to work together on developing children’s’ safety awareness and practicing how to keep safe in the car.

The children are given another opportunity to think analytically and learn how to keep safe in school through MY Project where they are invited with their classmates to make posters t on keeping safe in school to be displayed all around the school.

Here the children are encouraged to reflect on their safety awareness, see how keen they are on keeping safe , if they can say “No” to dangerous situation and if they know how ot seek help if they encounter a dangerous situation.

Unit 6- Eating well

This unit aims at developing children’s healthy eating habits. It teaches them to appreciate healthy eating, identify healthy and unhealthy food, how to think before making any decision related to their eating habits and to avoid junk food and replace it with healthy food. Through this unit the children learn to analyse their current meals and try to replace the unhealthy food with healthier one. All this is achieved through interesting activities and exercises.

The home school link activity provides a unique opportunity for parents and the child to work together on developing healthy eating habits at home where they work together to design a mini paper fridge with all the healthy or unhealthy food they currently have in their house fridge. Here they are invited to identify the healthy and unhealthy food and encouraged to replace the unhealthy food with healthy food.

Here the children are encouraged to reflect on their awareness of healthy and unhealthy food, see if they appreciate having healthy food, their level of commitment to having healthy food and avoiding junk food, and if they are keen on having breakfast before they go to school.
